I Can't Breathe

“Justice will not be served until those who are unaffected are as outraged as those who are.”
— Benjamin Franklin

I am struggling today.

Struggling to make sense of what continues to happen over and over and over and over.

Struggling to find adequate words to accurately convey my feelings.

Struggling to know where and how to funnel my sadness and anger.

Struggling because I can’t just fix. Or make better. Or ease the pain and worry that my black friends carry with them ALL THE TIME.

Struggling because I share those same experiences and grappling with that gross injustice to a different degree.

Struggling because even though I love the complexion of my skin, it is a fucking crime to have it.

Guilty that I’m relieved I woke up healthy this morning and that could have been me even though I shouldn’t.

Let’s not stop learning. Let’s not stop listening. Let’s not stop talking. Let’s not stop living.

Because we struggle.
